Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. I suspect my child may “learn differently”. Shouldn’t my
child’s school be able to help?
- Current legislation and funding issues prevent schools from
supporting an individual child’s specific learning struggle
until the child has failed several tiers of inclusive
instruction. Many times these tiers can take 1-3 years to
“fail”. Children with learning struggles cannot afford to wait
for the system to fail so that they can receive an appropriate
education.
2. At what age should my child be evaluated if
he or she is experiencing learning struggles?
- The best time to evaluate a child is as soon as you suspect
a problem. The elementary school years are vital building blocks
for a child’s learning career. Enthusiasm and skill development
lost during this time cannot be replaced. Early identification
and appropriate intervention is vital for life long learning and
success. Many times learning difficulties don’t become apparent
until a child is older. Our strategies can also work for middle
schoolers, teenagers and adults.
3. What is neuropsychology?
-
Neuropsychology is an applied science concerned
with the behavioral expression of brain dysfunction. In other
words, it is the science of knowing how the brain processes
information to give insight into the specific ways people learn
differently, and provide solutions to specific learning
struggles.
4. What does an assessment involve?
- Standardized written and oral tests are administered in a
safe, fun environment. The tests can take 2-3 hours and include
assessment of cognitive abilities, memory, attention, language,
visuospatial, executive functions, sensory issues, behavior,
emotion and personality. This data is then incorporated into an
accurate, objective, process-based summary.
5. Does my insurance cover assessments?
- Generally, insurance plans do not cover the cost of assessments. Contact Dr. Judy Davis for specific pricing for
your situation. Additional consultation after assessments are
billed at $190.00 per hour.
